From April 1, Truvada will no longer be available under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

But don’t be alarmed, there are several generic versions of Truvada available on the PBS for both PrEP and HIV treatment, and they all work the same way.

So if you are currently getting Truvada from your local pharmacy, from 1 April you will just be given a different brandFrom April 1, Truvada (manufactured by Gilead) will no longer be available under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) to get from your local pharmacy in Australia for use as PrEP or for treatment of HIV. For people currently getting Truvada through the PBS, what does this mean? Don’t worry, there are several generic versions of Truvada available on the PBS for both PrEP and HIV treatment, and they all work the same way. So if you are currently getting Truvada from your local pharmacy, from 1 April you will just be given a different brand. For more information about the different products available for PrEP, check out the Get PrEP’D website: https://getprepd.org.au/did-you-know/#PrEPproducts (this is a website for gay and other men who have sex with men, but the information on this page is suitable for all populations). If you have any questions about treatments for HIV, you can contact NAPWHA or your local organisation for people with HIV.
